LilyKate_Chapter2

After reading chapter 2, I have been reflecting on the opening image in a film. The opening image is the first thing your audience sees, thus carrying weight. It is the audience's first impression of the film as a whole, but often individual characters as well.

In the video above, it begs the question “What is it in the first minute that keeps us engaged?” The video goes on to explain how writing, lighting, characters, animals, and emotion all play parts. It is not about good or bad cinematography, but choosing a cinematography that is right for the film. The first scene should cause the audience to want to know what happens next. The video reveals several different movie examples that display how to capture the attention of your audience. Overall, I learned that the opening scene sets the tone for the entire film and holds great significance.
