Brock_Chapter5

A key idea that stuck with me from this chapter is choosing the right lens. Going back to a former blog I wrote previously, every choice a filmmaker makes, directly shapes how the audience can take a scene. Lenses are not just tools to make your picture look nicer, but it also is a tool that can specifically alter how your audience can perceive something.

One thing it talks about in this chapter is telelphoto lenses. It says telephoto lenses compress space which flattens the image and isolates the subject from the background. When the camera is close up, it can create a feeling of intimacy and focus. It also makes facial features appear softer and more clean.

Wide angle lenses are a little different, they distort space. Close ups with the wide lens can stretch features and make faces appear exagerated. Wide lenses are also great for immersing the viewer in a space, meaning you can show the surroundings easier and show the environment more.

This article supports the idea that lens choice is a tool for storytelling. It talks about how different lenses can shaoe emotion, perspective, and audience connection.
