A key idea that stuck with me throughout reading chapter one was the element of light in visual story telling. It talked about how lighting alone can communicate as much narrative information as pages of dialogue. I personally agree with this and would like to expand in my own experience. I have watched lots of shows and action movies, and I can confidently say that when reading this part of the chapter that’s the first thing that came to mind. There are plenty of instances where there is a scene with a specific type of lighting to help set the mood. Sometimes it’s dark when it’s a scary scene or something is about to happen, or maybe red when someone's angry.. One thing I really liked from this chapter was the mention of the movie The Shining. It talked about how they used soft lighting even though it was terrifying, which definitely sort of breaks the rules and expectations of lightning in film making, but it worked beautifully.

This video dives a little deeper into the essential steps to achieve cinematic lighting. It goes over things such as lighting direction, shadows, and types of lighting. Justus, the guy in the video, talks about how important lighting is in film making, and he does a great job getting the simple principles across.  After watching this video you should have a good understanding on how lighting is used in film making and the importance of it as well.
